about

Night Radio's fourth album, Down The Coast, was recorded over a period of months in 2011. A number of the basic tracks were recorded live in a shed, 10 kilometres from Dungog, NSW.

Compared with NR's previous releases this is a rocky affair. The opening track, Monster Storm, gives a hint as to what is to follow. It begins in a subdued fashion but then opens out into an electrically charged meditation upon the power of an approaching storm. The protagonist is driving his car in the hope he can be with his lover before the full onslaught begins.

The title track, Down The Coast, stretches out like a Neil Young with Crazy Horse jam and the amusing River Of Song brandishes elements of 70's rock...albeit in a f#?*#* up kind of way. And the closing track, Backroads, is a long churning guitar jam as well, a vehicle for guitarists Dave Rae and Darrell Archer to finally express their wilder tendencies in the context of this band.

There remain however a few typical NR ballads and curiosities. Songs such as Rock And Roll Morning, Eureka and Eternity and Kind Words are more aligned with NR's back catalogue...songs of yearning, delivered in the typically soulful, yet idiosyncratic way of vocalist Archer.

And there is the obligatory epic ballad, in this case, Eulogy For Henry O'Farrell, in which the gothic tale of a seemingly mythical character unravels at the speed of drying paint, washing over the listener a tapestry of visceral images in the manner of older NR songs such as Miss Pennsylvania and Rabbit Trapper.

Down The Coast is a worthy addition to Night Radio's take on the Australian vernacular. It continues their exploration of Australian Gothic/Folk Rock...but this time with an unbridled willingness to Rock.
